Need A Tow Truck? Two Tips To Help You Choose The Right Company

Automotive Blog

Needing a tow truck typically arises on an emergency basis.  You may find yourself stuck on the side of the highway after your engine stalls, or you attempt to crank up your car in the morning as you head to work, only to discover that your transmission has finally given out.  In these instances, it's easy to think that any tow truck will do as long as they can get your vehicle to the repair shop.  However, even though you may be frustrated, it's important to make a thoughtful choice so you can have a pleasant towing experience.  The next time you need a tow truck, keep these tips in mind so you can make the right choice.

Opt For Flatbed Towing

One of the first things you want to do when you're looking for a towing company is find one that offers flatbed towing.  This is extremely important, since failing to get a flatbed tower could have significant consequences.

There are two primary means of towing vehicles:  Flatbed and hook-and-chain.  Flatbed towing lifts the entire vehicle up onto the bed of truck and secures the car in place by inserting each of the four tires into a snug groove that is built into the truck bed.  Hook-and-chain towing differs because the car is towed in a diagonal manner, with the front of the car elevated by a hook that is attached to the rack and pin that connects the front tires.

The danger of hook-and-chain towing is that if the towing personnel attaches the hook incorrectly, they could bend the rack and pin.  You may not realize this has happened until you find that your tires are out of alignment, which leads to increased tire wear and could even result in a tire blowout.

Choosing a flatbed towing company can help you avoid this.  Because nothing under the vehicle is touched, there is a decreased chance that you'll have more vehicular damage to contend with when you use this method.

Opt For A Flat Rate

When you're getting a tow truck, choosing a company that offers a flat rate is also a good idea.  Instead of paying by the mile, or having other fees come up that you were completely unaware of, you'll know up front just how much you'll pay for the entire towing experience.

Selecting the right towing company when you're in a jam doesn't have to be difficult if you know what to look for.  When you need a tow truck, keep these tips in mind so you can be pleased with your decision.
